THE COPPER PENNY INN AT CHIPSHOP

Peter & Marion Baker would like to welcome you to their family run Inn.

Having farmed in the area for over forty years our belief is to offer great British pub food expertly cooked from products locally sourced in the region, complemented with a superb choice of beverages, served in a warm, friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

With the expertise of our Head Chef, who has previously worked locally in successful establishments, our mouth – watering menu is all homemade.

We offer Lunch and Evening Menus as well as a Specials Board that change weekly.  You can also enjoy a delicious Roast for Sunday Lunch.

For those special occasions we do have a function room which also features a skittle alley, this can be booked for private functions with a choice of appetising menus offered.

Enjoy the glorious sunshine in our beer garden, where we hold special events such as spit-roasts, barbeques and other themes.

The name Copper Penny Inn was chosen because during the eighteenth century miners in the area were paid with tokens/chips so they could exchange them in the local inn for goods and food – hence the name of the hamlet Chipshop.  Private individuals, traders and councils produced these coins known as tokens/chips to be used only in the local inns as they had no legal tender. Also at this time the mining industry was booming and Morwellham Quay was known as The Greatest Copper Port in Queen Victoria’s Empire.  The world’s largest copper strike was found at the famous Devon Great Consols Mine, which was once the richest source of copper in Europe.

The Tavistock penny token is fairly typical of a penny token of its period showing a local view that of Devon Mines, on one side and on the reverse the Prince of Wales plume of feathers.

One interesting fact about the copper Tavistock penny is that there are three different types, if you look at the smoke coming out from the chimney stack one blows left, one right and the last one vertical.

We hope you have enjoyed your visit and look forward to seeing you again soon.
